Efficacy of a nurse education program to control central venous catheter-associated infections in a pediatric intensive care unit in Lima-Peru: a quasi-experimental study

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a nurse education program to control CVC infection at the pediatric ICU of Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (INSN) in Lima, Peru, in 2024. Materials and methods: Single-group quasi-experimental research. The effectiveness of the education program was measured by assessing the knowledge and level of practice compliance in CVC care in infection control before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the intervention. Fifty-seven nurses participated by answering a knowledge questionnaire and an observation guide for compliance with CVC care practices, previously validated in this context. Results: The education program was effective in increasing the level of knowledge about CVC care (p < 0.05). The degree of compliance with nursing practice for CVC care in ICU improved. There was also evidence of improvement in all dimensions (p < 0.05) of medication administration, CVC healing, personal hygiene, administration of personal protective elements, CVC insertion and removal. Conclusion: The education program proved to be effective in improving nurses’ knowledge and compliance with evidence-based practices in CVC care and maintenance.
