Clinical and epidemiological characteristics in patients with atopic dermatitis treated at a pediatric reference health center in Lima, Peru, in 2021

Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of atopic dermatitis (AD) in patients under 15 years treated at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (INSN) in Breña, Lima, Peru, in 2021. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study that analyzed data from 99 medical records of outpatients of the dermatology service of the INSN between 28 days of birth and under 15 years of age diagnosed with AD in 2021. A descriptive analysis was performed. Results: 52.5 % were male, median age was 4 (IQR: 2-8) years and median age of DA onset was 3 (IQR: 0-4) years. Chronic DA status was present in 68.9%. 70% of DA cases had no history of atopy or family history and 83.7% had complete immunization. The most common clinical features were lichenification (71.4%) and skin lesions (75%). Conclusion: DA in chronic stage was the most commonly observed and the most frequent clinical features were lichenification and skin lesions.
