Definitions in Healthcare: Discharge Against Medical Advice, Exemption from Liability, and Patient Elopement

The medical record is a medico-legal document that records patient data, care provided, and events occurred during their stay in a healthcare facility. This record includes situations such as voluntary discharge, granted when a patient decides to leave without medical authorization; waiver of liability due to a treatment refusal after receiving clear information on consequences and alternatives; and patient elopement, an adverse event that occurs when a patient leaves without medical authorization or voluntary discharge. These records provide legal protection for healthcare personnel and respect patient autonomy in decision-making. This article aims to present the conceptual framework and importance of these terms through a literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar.
